South Pacific crossing
In 2024, Niccolò Banfi undertook a three-month sailing expedition across the South Pacific Ocean, covering more than 6,500 nautical miles from Easter Island to the Fiji Islands.
Along the way, he reached some of the most isolated islands on Earth, Pitcairn, home to the descendants of the Bounty mutineers, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas, Tahiti, Moorea, and Tonga.
The journey was not only an exploration of remoteness, but of humanity itself. Niccolò met island communities, collected their stories, and gave voice to local projects dedicated to protecting fragile ecosystems and marine reserves.
From beach clean-ups where tons of plastic waste accumulate, to the daily fight against the rising sea level caused by climate change, this expedition revealed how people living at the edge of the world are quietly defending the future of the planet.
